Eddie Stern

Astanga LedMysore Program

Eddie is a well known yoga teacher, author, and lecturer based in Brooklyn, New York. He is known for his multi-disciplinary approach to furthering education and access to yoga, as well as his teaching expertise in Ashtanga Yoga. His approach combines the ancient philosophy and practices of yoga with a modern, scientific understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms that make yoga work.

Eddie has followed for more than twenty years, uninterruptedly, the teachings of his guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, from whom he learned the most profound essence of the Ashtanga Yoga system. Always close to Guruji until his death in 2009, Eddie devoted his entire life to the study of the Ashtanga Yoga system, including its more esoteric aspects. He has studied Sanskrit and many of the scriptures of the Indian tradition as well as all aspects of the Indian and yogic culture. Eddie embodies the most authentic expression of how Indian thoughts can be relevant to our western lives. He's one of the most recognized and extraordinary teachers of Astanga Yoga in the world today and this workshop is a great opportunity to share with him the true and pure essence of this uniquely comprehensive system of yoga.

He has published several books on yoga, including Yoga Mala (Farrar, Straus and Giroux), and On Yoga: The Architecture of Peace (TASCHEN). His latest book, One Simple Thing, was released on March 12th, 2019. His projects include the Urban Yogis, a gun- and harm reduction program in Queens, NY; Breathe, Move, Rest, a public education health and wellness non-profit; and most recently, The Breathing App, a free app that teaches resonance breathing for stress and anxiety reduction. One Simple Thing: Talk (Hoe Yoga Werkt)

With Eddie Stern

22 March 2020

Eddie is a well-known Yoga teacher, author, and lecturer based in Brooklyn, New York. He is known for his multi-disciplinary approach to furthering education and access to Yoga, as well as his teaching expertise in Astanga Yoga. His approach combines the ancient philosophy and practices of Yoga with a modern, scientific understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms that make Yoga work. He has published several books on Yoga.   Eddie has followed for more than twenty-five years the teachings of his guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, from whom he learned the most profound essence of the Astanga Yoga system. Always close to Guruji until his death in 2009, Eddie devoted a large part of his life to the study of the Astanga Yoga system, including its more esoteric aspects. He has studied Sanskrit and many of the scriptures of the Indian tradition as well as all aspects of the Indian and yogic culture. In the last decade, Eddie’s focus has also moved towards investigating what makes yoga work so well and how science understands yoga to be an effective practice for nervous system self-regulation.   His latest book, One Simple Thing (March 2019), has been translated into Dutch and was released at the Inner Peace Conference (October 2019, Amsterdam) The book is called Hoe yoga werkt and during the talk, Eddie will share his wisdom and enthusiasm with us.   Eddie will discuss some of the underlying mechanisms of Yoga that make it an effective practice for self-regulation, emotional regulation, and spiritual experience, and highlight specifically the effects of certain pranayamas and other yogic practices that are particularly powerful. In One Simple Thing, Eddie examines a variety of scientific findings and yogic explanations that complement both an Eastern and Western approach to spiritual practice. Even after thousands of years, Yoga continues to be an infinitely interesting and exciting practice and philosophy, never growing old, and always staying new. In this talk, Eddie will explain some of the reasons why this is so. There will, of course, be an opportunity to buy his book (and have it signed by the author!).   Prices: €20 talk only €40 talk + Dutch edition book €25 Dutch edition book (The Dutch version of the book is also available on the day itself)
