We are happy to announce that we will be offering daily Mysore classes with Sasha van Aalst at the Nieuwe Achtergracht starting from November.
The transmission of this practice has always been from one person to another, in an intuitive, receptive and guiding relationship. The practice will be taught one-on-one in the supportive context of community. No experience is required, just some curiosity and a willingness to learn. You will be carefully guided through the Astanga Yoga series, step by step and at your own pace. The room at the Nieuwe Achtergracht will be open daily from 6.30 - 8.30 for students of all levels, to be together in a clear, safe and encouraging space.
Astanga yoga is a living tradition that has been passed down through a lineage of devotion to practical experience, experiment and study. This ancient method was taught by Vamana Rishi through a text called Yoga Korunta. Rama Mohan Bramachari transmitted the Korunta to his student T. Krishnamacharya in 1900. He passed these teachings down to Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois who began his studies with Krishnamacharya in 1927. Together they formed the Astanga Vinyasa yoga system whereby the sequencing of movement combined with the internal forms of the practice (breath, posture and drishti (steady gaze) enable the student to engage in a regular ritual of focused movement, creating space to be present with sensation in the body, space for the mind to breathe and room for insight and joy to arise. Today the knowledge of this practice is held and spread through Sri K. Pattabhi Jois’ grandson, R. Sharath Jois at KPJAYI in Mysore, India, and by many dedicated practitioners all over the world.
For those who are yet unfamiliar - to get to know the practice there will be several introductory classes at the Nieuwe Achtergracht starting October 1st:

Expect to start with a 20-30 min practice the first few days. Don’t worry, as you nourish it, it will grow.
From the 1st of November, all students are welcome to join with their regular (non-Mysore) membership fee. From January 2018 we would like to ask all committed students to change to the Mysore Membership if they would like to continue their Mysore practice.
Sasha van Aalst will be teaching the program at the Nieuwe Achtergracht. Please join to explore, come and offer your presence to practice and see what it brings. if you have any questions regarding the Mysore program at the Nieuwe Achtergracht, feel free to contact Sasha.
