Yoga Playlist: Grounding Vata
by Victoria (Tory) Raven Hyndman
It’s the beautiful auspicious season of Autumn, it’s time for us to turn inward, to take in all that the summer has given us, the outward flow of energy turning around to go in. This is a magical time of the year, I love it so very much. I was born in this season, on the autumn equinox, so therefore perhaps it feels extra important for me to take time to reflect on what this year around the sun has taught me. But even if you are not born in this season, it is a time to become quieter again.
Several cultures honour this season, as it is a season to honour and respect the ending and renewing of cycles, of honouring death. The Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos) in Latin culture, Halloween (also a celebration of death and the dark days upon us), all ask us to remember the space between life and returning to its source. The tricky part of this is, we need to take good care of our nervous system. Otherwise, this sacred window of opportunity for deep inner transformation can become a place where we lose our ground, both physically and mentally.
Over the next few weeks, bike extra slow (you’ll see many more accidents and hear more ambulances than usual), speak using as little words as necessary, and take more rest throughout the day as well as getting to bed by 21:30 - 22:00. Practice your yoga asana with extra awareness and presence and refine your Ujjayi breath. Do your morning sadhana (spiritual ritual) of honouring and nourishing the nervous system by doing smooth and controlled slow alternate nostril breath and oiling the body with warm sesame oil before your shower each day.
Listen to calm music and dive into your spiritual books to nourish the soil of your spiritual foundation to keep you feeling grounded mentally.
It’s a beautiful and powerful time for deep inner transformation, but we need to have our vehicle well-nourished, and our nervous system and batteries charged and grounded! Take care of your Vata dosha and reap it’s subtle and powerful strengths.
