Opening Your Heart

This workshop is designed to create space, awareness, and alignment of the spine. Find out what backbends can do for you on an emotional and physical level. You will be guided through some fundamental alignment principles and techniques to increase mobility and keep you strong and safe in backbends.
What you will learn:
Backbends are the counterpose to our daily lives. We spend hours a day sitting behind our desks, leaning over laptops and smartphones. And with the change to a cooler season, our shoulders round even further to protect us from the cold. Combined, all of this hunching has the unintended consequence of turning us in toward ourselves and closing off the heart. This affects us not only physically, but emotionally as well.
On a physical level, rounding the back strains the muscles in the back of the neck and across the shoulders, increasing the likelihood of tension headaches and back pain. Also, as the shoulders round forward, the compression of the space around the heart and chest makes it harder to take deep, full breaths.
On an emotional level, this tendency to collapse the chest creates a barrier around the heart. Making ourselves vulnerable to settling into a pattern where we distrust and disconnect from ourselves and others.
Backbends help us to open up the heart chakra, increasing our sense of well-being and connection to the world around us.
The heart is our spiritual core and the central point of the Chakra system. When the heart is balanced, we are able to receive, release, accept, and feel in harmony.
This workshop is recommended for students with some basic yoga experience. Various options to suit students personal needs will be offered. The pace of the workshop will be gentle.

Judith has been teaching movement and dance for more then twenty years. She initially trained as a contemporary dancer at London Contemporary dance school, later as a teacher and choreographer at Codarts in Rotterdam.
