The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is widely regarded as THE authoritative text on yoga, which offers guidelines for living a meaningful and purposeful life and for navigating through the spiritual path by means of yoga practices.
The word sutra means literally a ‘thread’. In Indian philosophy, it is often used to denote a thread of thoughts and Patanjali’s work is, in fact, a compilation of his threads of thought on Yoga, which in the old days were to be memorized by the students through chanting and repetition. Patanjali lived somewhere in between 100 and 400 CE, influenced by the Vedic tradition of India, Samkhya philosophy as well as Buddhism - his work is still completely relevant to us today as it was at that time.
The text contains 195 Sutras, divided between four chapters, discussing the aims and practice of yoga, in the journey towards liberation. Like a gentle guiding hand, the Yoga Sutras warn you of the pitfalls on your spiritual path and offer means to overcome them. As a philosophy, Yoga examines the human spirit’s relationship to the material world and how the spirit might be freed from suffering through discipline and introspection. We suffer because of not knowing our true Self, so the Sutras provide a guide for our spiritual journey of remembering.
While there is a teaching in each Sutra, the study of the full textbook will take a few months - if not years! In this workshop series, we will selectively explore and chant parts of the Yoga Sutras (from Pada 1), with the intention to convey some of the most relevant topics mentioned by Patanjali and to inspire you to further inquire into the question of what Yoga really is.
Each session will include reading and explanations of selected sutras, discussions and traditional chanting of the sutras. Each workshop series will dive into a specific Pada of the Yoga Sutras, starting with Samadhi Pada (chapter 1). In the near future, we aim to offer you workshops in all 4 Padas, in order to cover the most relevant aspects of Patanjali's Sutras, and to do so in a way that each workshop series can be taken alone, independently from the other Padas.
No experience necessary, just an open mind and genuine curiosity to inquire into the nature of the Self. Come in comfortable clothes to sit on a pillow, there will be no yoga asana.
The other workshop series dates are soon to be announced:
Sadhana Pada : about Practice (Yoga Sutras 2)
Vibhuti Pada : about Results (Yoga Sutras 3)
Kaivalya Pada : about Liberation (Yoga Sutras 4)

Over Lydia Aytogmus & Claudia Pradella
About Lydia “Yoga is the state where you are missing nothing.” Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati Since her very first class, Lydia Aytogmus has been mesmerized by the transformative power and therapeutic impact of yoga; that by means of breath and movement on the mat, we can explore the interconnectedness of all off the mat. She sees yoga as a holistic, radical approach to inner peace, simply by means of looking inside. Yoga is for her a daily invitation to an endless deepening of inner peace and joy.
