The Royal Path of Astanga Yoga

with Eddie and Jocelyne Stern

With Eddie & Jocelyne Stern

24 – 30 August 2018

This is a very unique and wonderful opportunity to retreat with one of the most respected and experienced astanga yoga teachers and to share a week with other dedicated practitioners from all over the world!

We are very honored to share this week of astanga yoga at the beautiful Mandali retreat centre with Eddie and Jocelyne Stern. They are the co-founders of Ashtanga Yoga New York, the Brooklyn Yoga Club and the Brooklyn Ganesha Temple. They studied under Astanga Yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois from 1991 until his passing in 2009. Eddie has published several books on Pattabhi Jois and Astanga Yoga, including a translation of Pattabhi Jois’s 1960 treatise, Yoga Mala. Jocelyne and Eddie continue to study with Pattabhi Jois’s grandson and successor, Paramaguru R. Sharath Jois.

This retreat is a great opportunity to experience the true and pure essence of this uniquely comprehensive system of yoga, under the guidance of these highly recognized teachers of Astanga Yoga who embody an authentic expression of how eastern wisdom can be relevant to our western lives.

In their first ever week-long retreat, Eddie and Jocelyne will focus on teaching the basic and foundational principles of yoga as a healing practice, one that helps to release long-held emotions and fixed ideas, builds vitality and positivity, and leads us to live in alignment with the deeper purpose of our lives.

The topics that we will discuss during the daily lectures will use the principle of kriya yoga, or the three practices that reduce our mental blockages, as our format. These three are physical practices like asanas and pranayama, breathing practices that include chanting, and meditations that help us examine our emotional bodies. Our entire existence is an experience in consciousness, and each of these three practices examine this idea in practical ways, so that our experience of our true self becomes more pronounced, or more profound.

Each day we will have Mysore practice, pranayama, meditation, chanting, lectures, and yoga therapy, through the different periods of the day. There will be plenty of time for asking questions, and as the group size is limited, more time for talking, investigating, and exploring inwardly. Beginning students who have limited experience in Astanga Yoga are also welcome.

Location: Mandali Retreat Center

This retreat is hosted at the Mandali Retreat Center. Mandali is a peaceful retreat centre, established on a mountaintop, overlooking lago d’Orta in Italy. It is an open space dedicated to spiritual practice and personal transformation. Mandali provides an optimal environment to exchange and receive teachings, wisdom and guidance from some of the world’s most inspiring teachers.

The location is a result of an extended search. When the founders saw the view from the mountain top, it accelerated their hearts. They realized they had found the perfect place. Building this place is their dream and heartfelt intention; to create a place of quiet beauty, to learn and to relax.

They built this place from scratch, you can have a look at the making off video here (very impressive!). It's architecture is a faithful reflection of the ancient villages by which it is surrounded. The centre breathes a soothing, serene atmosphere and offers its guests a guiding hand. You will fall in love with nature, find balance in the elements and feel harmony with your true self.

"We believe that to spend time in retreat is a necessity for anyone interested in a balanced way of living. We look forward to welcoming you at Mandali." - The Mandali team

Mandali is set 850 meters above sea level, overlooking lago d’ Orta in Italy, the site faces southeast, enjoying the morning sun rising over the Mottarone mountain range across the lake. The classic feng shui dream of enjoying the inspiration of the sun, lake, and valley in front of you, whilst being supported and protected by the buildings, trees, and gardens behind is a functioning reality at Mandali. If you decide to go off of the retreat center to feel into the local villages and cuisine, there is much to take in and to taste.
