Vinyasa Yoga & the Chakras Workshop

With Moena de Jong

The Chakras are spinning wheels of energy, a storage place of Prana (lifeforce). When the harmony of Yang and Yin is disturbed, we can experience a blockage that appears either physically or mentally.

How Vinyasa yoga relates to the chakras: our body counts hundreds of energy meeting points. When we talk about the Chakras, we mention the seven main energy wheels where we develop our personality and spiritual growth. The order in a Yang (Vinyasa, Astanga, Hatha) sequence is based on the Chakra system.

In this 3 part workshop, you will discover how each Asana group (e.g. forward bends, twists, inversions, backbends) relates to one of the seven main Chakras and which relationships in our lives work together with a specific Chakra. You will experience how yoga truly is a practice of purification. As our lives are based on different relationships (e.g.: parents friends/lovers/ teachers etc.) we find out the importance, joy, and challenges in all relationships. Just like our yoga practice can be challenging, both as supporting and healing.

To understand an Asana, we build up in all workshops in a progressive manner toward a peak pose with modifications so you can experience harmony and stabilization. To take a challenge in your Asana practice can help to remove accumulated energy blockages in a Chakra to move beyond the boundaries of the mind. Pranayama will be part of this series of workshops to stimulate the energy body as like Mantras to illuminate all Chakras.

Every workshop will focus on a Vinyasa Yoga practice, related to 2-3 of the main Chakras. Through intelligent sequencing, we'll build up towards a peak pose (with modifications). Chakra philosophy will be interwoven to understand yourself and your relationship with others better. Pranayama and Mantra will also be part of these workshops, to clarify and illuminate our energy body.

As each Chakra relates with an Asana group we’ll relate every workshop with a different focus:

Workshop 1:  Saturday 22 February 2020

Muladhara and Svadisthana Chakra

The first and second chakra are our ground. The place where we can come home in ourselves. Standing poses, as well as hip openers, are asanas targeting these two first chakras. Through a Vinyasa practice, we work toward a peak pose for Muladhara chakra (Svarga Dvidasana) and for Svadisthana Chakra (Eka Pada) and Koundiyasana (flying split). Of course, modifications will be given.

Workshop 2: Saturday 21 March 2020

Manipura and Anahata Chakra

The third chakra is located in the solar plexus or navel area. This chakra deals with our self-confidence but also governs our digestive system.   We target this chakra in twists (Paravritta Bakasana) Anahata chakra, the fourth chakra is the heart chakra. This center is all about love, joy and compassion. All chest openers are heart openers, targeting Anahata Chakra. In this workshop, we'll work towards a Vrishikasana (Scorpio).

Workshop 3: Saturday 9 May 2020

Vishuddha, Ajna and Sahasrara Chakra

Vishuddha chakra is located in the throat center and deals with speech, speaking up and sharing. Ajna chakra is our third eye center. It allows us to see our Self and discriminate between what is real and unreal. Sahasrara chakra, our crown chakra, is the most subtle of all seven chakras. It's about pure consciousness and enlightenment. We access the three upper chakras through inversions like shoulder stand (Sarvangasana), headstand (Sirsasana) and handstand (Vrksasana).
