Art of Asana: Energetic Alignment & Breath (50 hrs)

Teaching with refinement of asana alignment can only come with a deep and thorough understanding of the foundation and integration of skeletal and muscular alignment principles and techniques. In this module, you will be able to expand your knowledge and application of alignment to fine tune the outer body, the visceral body and energetic body. These different bodies are intimately linked and affect each other in every aspect of asana practice.


This module will give you the understanding and tools to teach more subtle alignment actions in the body, energetic alignment applied to Pranayama, the use of Bandhas, and more.
With understanding, confident teaching follows and you will practice teaching on each other to establish this knowledge into your teaching.


Program outline

  • Practice of advanced asana, focusing on more subtle alignment principles and breath work
  • Alignment actions applied to the actions of engagement and/or release of the specific muscles needed to perform an asana well
  • Therapeutic alignment/injury Management: Tools for dealing with the most common injuries and limitations in the bio-mechanical body when performing an asana, to enable the students to safely participate in the class and use yoga as a practice of revalidation and healing
  •  Deeper exploration of energetic alignment in asana
  • Energetic value of each of the groups of asana, exploring the energetic qualities within the different asana, and how they affect the physical and the subtle body
  • Each day will include an asana practice, theory and training practice (such as adjustments, practice teach, looking at bodies, etc) partner work and Q&A.

Requirements

  •  At least 2 years of steady Yoga Practice
  •  Basic knowledge of Sanskrit (i.e. Sanskrit names of the asanas)
  •  Willingness to practice teaching skills
  • To have successfully completed the module Fundamentals of Alignment with Adela Serrano & Sandra Carson (if you haven't completed this module but still like to participate, you can also attend a minimum of 5 classes with Sandra and discuss any further requirements personally with her)

Before the program starts, you will be sent preparatory homework, which includes studying the poses which will be covered during this module and reviewing the material from the Foundation module. Selected readings from “Light on Yoga, by BKS Iyengar”, “Light on the Yoga Sutras, by B.K.S. Iyengar “, “Hatha Yoga illustrated, by Martin Kirk” and “Refining the breath, by Doug Keller” will also be required.


Extra hours: students are required to meet at least 3 times in groups (1x month) to develop asana sequence, practice and review. You will also be asked to assist 2 classes with the teacher to develop assessment and assisting skills.

About Sandra Carson

Sandra Carson is a knowledgable and insightful yoga teacher who has been teaching internationally since 2002.  She teaches mostly in the Vinyasa style with great care and compassion for her students.  Challenging the students in the practice, she carefully guides them from empowered awareness to the space where transformation can take place.
