Art of Asana: Fundamentals of Alignment (50 hrs)

With Adela Serrano & Sandra Carson

Art of Asana is a 3-parts program designed for students and teachers of yoga who are looking to deepen their knowledge on the alignment of yoga asana. Each 50-hrs module will cover elements of the physical and energetic form, the alignment actions, the use of breath, and the energetic and therapeutic alignment and value of yoga.

The first part forms the ground from which you will build your alignment knowledge for yoga asana, and is required to continue into any of the other 2 modules. The other 2 parts of the Art of Asana (“Technical Alignment and Principles of Teaching” with Adela starting in January, and “Energetic alignment and breath” with Sandra starting in May), deepening in the understanding of the mechanical alignment of the asanas and in the more subtle alignment actions of the body and breath, will provide the strong roots and specific direction that your practice needs to expand into the more comprehensive refinements of asana practice and teaching.

To progress and grow in your yoga practice, it is important that you know the foundation. This basis will be established firmly in this 50-hours program, where you will be introduced to the foundational alignment principles based on the Iyengar yoga and Anusara yoga systems.

This introduction is not merely an overview but will form the ground from which you will build your asana alignment knowledge. Working on the Sanskrit roots of asana, the form and actions of the asana and basic energetic alignment will provide the strong roots that your practice needs to expand into the more subtle refinements of asana.

Each day will include an asana practice, theory and training practice (such as adjustments, practice teach, observing, etc), partner work and Q&A.

Program outline

  • Familiarization with the systems and approach of Iyengar and Anusara yoga, two systems renowned for precise alignment.
  • The principles of the anatomical alignment of a series of asana.
  • Introduction into merging breath awareness and breath work into the alignment of the physical body.
  • Use of props, adjustments and the necessary tools to assess and assist the student into the most optimal physical and energetic form and actions needed in the asana.
  • The use of breath in alignment actions, moving in and out of asana in dynamic sequences (Vinyasas).

Each day will include an asana practice, theory and training practice (such as adjustments, practice teach, observing, etc) partner work and Q&A.

Extra Hours

Plan some extra hours in preparation to the program to start, as you will be sent preparatory homework, which includes studying the poses which will be covered during this module. Selected readings from “Light on Yoga, by BKS Iyengar”, “Hatha Yoga illustrated, by Martin Kirk” and “Refining the breath, by Doug Keller” will also be required. Students will also be invited to meet at least 3 times in groups (1x month) to develop asana sequence, practice and review.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of steady asana yoga practice;
  • Students are expected to be familiar with the practice of the asanas and their Sanskrit names, as per the list below (asana curriculum); therefore you are advised to read/study the specific poses from the book Light on Yoga before the start of the program;
  • Willingness to practice teaching skills.

Required literature

  • Light on Yoga, by B.K.S. Iyengar
  • Refining the Breath, by Doug Keller (we will be working with this book, but it is not easy to find. If you like to get this book, contact Sandra Carson).
  • Anatomy book - “The key Muscles of Hatha Yoga” - by Ray Long
