This class is designed to take your Astanga practice to the next level—why do we practice the Astanga sequence and how does it begin to work beyond the asana? Over time we learn to watch our reactive mind, resist our typical responses, and reroute our ruts. The vinyasa system of Astanga links the asanas with transitions between the postures and sets the pacing of the practice. It asks us to balance the attention to the physical asana with the meditation of the synchronized movement and breath.
We will examine:
- How do we transition into and out of the postures of primary series with ease?
- And when can the mind relax into the rhythm of the sequence?
- How do we learn to ride the wave of the vinyasa?
We will spend half of this 2 hour class studying and practicing asana such as the transitions, jump-backs and jump-throughs of the primary series. The other half will be devoted to discussion about the philosophy of this method and how we use the information we gather in our yoga practice in our daily life.
This is open to all levels of students interested in Astanga.

About Megan Riley
Megan began an Astanga practice at the start of her career in higher education after completing her graduate work in creative writing in the U.S. What started as a search for an exercise to reduce stress and connect philosophy to practice, the yoga led her to her first teacher and, eventually, to her first trip to the Krishna Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore, India.
