Astanga Yoga: one day with Eddie Stern
Starting on 18 December 2017 See all dates
We are extremely honored to welcome Eddie Stern back in Amsterdam for this one special day of teachings! Eddie will bring the authenticity of his teaching to all students of Astanga Yoga. The youngest of the so-called Senior Teachers of Astanga Yoga in the world, Eddie has followed for more than twenty years', uninterruptedly, the teaching of his guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, from whom he could learn the most profound essence of the Astanga Yoga system. Always close to Guruji until his death in 2009, Eddie devoted his entire life to the study of the Astanga Yoga system, including its lesser popular aspects. He has studied Sanskrit and many of the scriptures of the Indian tradition as well as all aspects of the Indian and yogic culture. Eddie Stern embodies the most authentic expression of how Indian thoughts can be relevant to our western lives. He's one of the most recognized and extraordinary teachers of Astanga Yoga in the world today and any time with him is a great opportunity to share the true and pure essence of this uniquely comprehensive system of yoga.
For this one day of teachings, Eddie will offer 3 sessions, each of which can be booked independently. The early morning Mysore practice is offered to the already dedicated students of Astanga yoga who have an established Mysore (self) practice. The day will continue with a chanting & philosophy session, based on the teachings of the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. In the evening, we will have the opportunity to work more in a therapeutic way, with a class focused on knee & shoulder issues, and open to questions about the practice and beyond.
Session one: Mysore Practice - 7:00h - 9:00h
Mysore practice is appropriate for beginners as well as students of all levels and is the traditional method of learning yoga, one on one from teacher to student. However for this one session only, regardless from the level of your practice, we ask you to be already familiar with the Astanga Yoga Mysore Style of practice. If in doubt, please contact us via email prior to registering.
Session two: Pranayama, Chanting and Philosophy - 10:00h - 12:00h
Patnajali’s Yoga Sutras: Vibhuti Pada. Over the past few months Eddie has become increasingly interested in how some of the super powers, or siddhis, listed in chapter 3 of the yoga sutras, have interesting correlations to the functions of the autonomic nervous system. In the philosophy portion of this class, we’ll take a look at some of these sutras, and also speak about the activities of the autonomic nervous system in relation to yoga. We’ll begin and end with chanting some simple yet powerful Sanskrit mantras, and practice some simple pranayama to prepare us for the chanting. Everyone’s welcome.
Session three: Therapeutics class - 18:30h - 20:45h
In this evening class we will do some light yoga therapy poses that will address alternative postures for knee and shoulder problems that are common in yoga and every day life. Feel free to bring your questions about poses that are troubling you, and we will have time to try ways to make those poses more comfortable for you.
While we won’t have time to address everyone’s particular problems, we can look at general alternative positions that could be helpful for everyone to know.
