Astanga Yoga: Primary Series Intensive

With Claudia Pradella & Eva Ugolini

6 weekends to explore the primary series of Astanga Yoga in-depth: a new program with Claudia Pradella & Eva Ugolini starting on 15 January, 2022.

Explore the depths of your yoga practice according to the eight limbs of Astanga Yoga - the roadmap presented by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras.

As we journey on the path of Astanga Yoga, we begin to discover a new connection to our breath, to the ways our body moves, to an enhanced sense of awareness which soon becomes a new way of operating - first on the mat, then off the mat as well. An Astanga practice develops slowly, requiring effort, patience, and dedication, but consistently its effects are felt and wired into our system until it simply becomes a natural part of who we are.

This program provides a supporting structure for the Astanga Yoga practitioner to deepen his or her practice and to further explore who they really are at a deeper level of being.

Over a period of 6 months, your practice will develop and fine-tune to match your motivations and aspirations. Using a variety of techniques, you will become established in your morning routine (Meditation, Kriyas, Pranayama, Asana). You will gain an in-depth understanding of the Primary Series of the Astanga Yoga system, as originally taught by K P Jois of Mysore, both in its traditional self-practice (Mysore) style and in its counted-through (led) format. You will be guided individually in your own practice directly by the teachers so that you can progress according to your own level of experience and capacity.

Each morning will be fully practice-based (about 3 hours). The afternoon will be dedicated to exploring the philosophical context for spiritual practice and to further understand the effects of Astanga Yoga practice on the physical body, the nervous system, and the mind. Patanjali’s view of Astanga Yoga and its relevance to our daily lives – on and off the mat – will be our main focus. We will use the Yamas and Niyamas as tools for self-inquiry, contemplation and psycho-spiritual work.

Plenty of space will be given to the exploration in details of each pose of the Primary Series, from the perspective of the physical and subtle anatomy of the human body, breath alignment, and technique. You will learn how to maintain a safe practice, how to deal with injuries, and how to provide assistance to others (hands-on adjustments).

You will be exposed to the history of the Astanga Yoga tradition, understanding its context, origin, and evolution over the past 50+ years. You will learn the Sanskrit names of the Asanas, the counts of Vinyasas, and the chants which are used in our daily practice.

We will take time to discuss relevant lifestyle aspects of integrating ancient Yoga practices in our modern busy lives.

Expect 99% practice, 1% theory.
