We are extremely honoured to welcome Eddie Stern back to Amsterdam. Eddie is a well-known yoga teacher, author, and lecturer based in New York City. He is known for his multi-disciplinary approach to furthering education and access to yoga, as well as his teaching expertise in Astanga Yoga. His approach combines the ancient philosophy and practices of yoga with a modern, scientific understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms that make yoga work. 


Eddie has followed for more than twenty-five years the teachings of his guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, from whom he learned the most profound essence of the Astanga Yoga system. Eddie devoted a large part of his life to the study of the Astanga Yoga system, including its more esoteric aspects. He has studied Sanskrit and many of the scriptures of the Indian tradition as well as all aspects of the Indian and yogic culture. In the last decade, Eddie’s focus has also moved towards investigating what makes yoga work so well and how science understands yoga to be an effective practice for nervous system self-regulation.


Eddie embodies the most authentic expression of how Indian thoughts can be relevant to our western lives. He's one of the most authoritative and well-respected teachers of Astanga Yoga in the world today and this workshop is a great opportunity to share with him the true and pure essence of this uniquely comprehensive system of yoga. 



In this workshop, Eddie will offer two morning sessions which include Pranayama, Asana (led class) and a lecture on each day. Please bring your own mat as the workshop is held at the beautiful Vondelkerk.


Daily schedule

9.00 - 9.30 Pranayama class
9.45 - 11.15 Primary series led (Saturday’s class will include half intermediate)
11.30 - 12.30 Lecture: Introduction to Yoga and the Endocrine System


Introduction to Yoga and the Endocrine System

The endocrine system is comprised of glands that produce and secrete hormones. These chemical substances help regulate our body's growth, metabolism, energy levels, as well as our responses to stress, mood changes, and injury. Yogic physiology has described the endocrine system as the chakra system, specifically the first six chakras, which seem to correspond to the locations of our endocrine glands as well as major nerve plexuses. Over the course of these two days, we will go through an overview of the endocrine system and the hormones they release, discuss the chakra system and how the two systems correlate with each other, and learn chanting and posture practices to stimulate and balance the endocrine system. 



Please note that the led classes will not be suitable for complete beginners. Previous experience with Astanga Yoga is highly recommended.
