This workshop has taken place already, please visit our Workshop Page for a more recent offering of workshops and trainings.
We are extremely honored to welcome Eddie Stern back to Amsterdam and for the first time to Den Haag!
Eddie is a well known yoga teacher, author, and lecturer based in New York City. He is known for his multi-disciplinary approach to furthering education and access to yoga, as well as his teaching expertise in Astanga Yoga. His approach combines the ancient philosophy and practices of yoga with a modern, scientific understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms that make yoga work.
Eddie has followed for more than twenty-five years the teachings of his guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, from whom he learned the most profound essence of the Astanga Yoga system. Always close to Guruji until his death in 2009, Eddie devoted a large part of his life to the study of the Astanga Yoga system, including its more esoteric aspects. He has studied Sanskrit and many of the scriptures of the Indian tradition as well as all aspects of the Indian and yogic culture. In the last decade Eddie’s focus has also moved towards investigating what makes yoga work so well and how science understands yoga to be an effective practice for nervous system self-regulation.
Eddie embodies the most authentic expression of how Indian thoughts can be relevant to our western lives. He's one of the most authoritative and well respected teachers of Astanga Yoga in the world today and this workshop is a great opportunity to share with him the true and pure essence of this uniquely comprehensive system of yoga.
The program will start in Den Haag on Friday and Saturday, to then continue in Amsterdam on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. In this 5 days workshop, Eddie will offer a combination of mysore practice and lectures with chanting, pranayama and philosophy for regular practitioners as well as students just new to Astanga Yoga.
Every morning will start with the traditional Mysore Style of self practice, followed by a chanting, lecture and philosophy session each day on different topics. There will also be 2 afternoon sessions dedicated to explore a variety of scientific findings and yogic explanations that complement both an Eastern and Western approach to spiritual practice. Space for Q&A’s will be offered in all workshops.
Mysore practice is appropriate for beginners as well as students of all levels and is the traditional method of learning yoga, one on one from teacher to student. Due to the limited time available however, we would recommend participants to be already familiar with the practice of Astanga Yoga at some level.

One Simple Thing: Healing Findings of Yoga and Science
Eddie will discuss some of the underlying mechanisms of yoga that make it an effective practice for self-regulation, emotional regulation, and spiritual experience, and highlight specifically the effects of certain pranayamas and other yogic practices that are particularly powerful. Eddie will also be drawing from his latest book, One Simple Thing, in which he examines a variety of scientific findings and yogic explanations that complement both an Eastern and Western approach to spiritual practice. Even after thousands of years, yoga continues to be an infinitely interesting and exciting practice and philosophy, never growing old, and always staying new. In this class we will look at some of the reasons why this is so. This class will include chanting, pranayama, and lecture. There will also be an opportunity to buy his book (and have it signed by the author!).
Three Bodies, Five Sheaths as taught in Taittiriya Upanishad
In the ancient Hindu wisdom teachings of the Taittiriya Upanishad, our body, breath, mind, intellect, and source of joy are described as having five, interconnected parts that envelop each other like clouds. These are called the five sheaths, and they exist as part of the three-body model. The three bodies are the physical, subtle, and causal bodies, that though each made of different constituents, are still interlinked as well. The basic practices that were given by the yogis - postures, breathing, mantra, meditation, and service - address and purify each of the bodies and sheaths. In this class, we will discuss and examine each of these layers, and learn how we can, in a focused and deliberate way, work with every level of our being.
Seven States of Consciousness
Right now, as you read this sentence, you are in something called the waking state. Later tonight when you go to sleep, you will enter into a state where you are dreaming, and then eventually, a state where you are asleep, but not dreaming. These are three of our states of consciousness, and we cycle through them each day. But what about states that exist beyond the daily cycle of waking and sleeping that we move through? According to Vedanta, there are seven such states. The fourth state, called turiya, or the transcendent state, is quite well known, but the fifth, sixth and seventh states are not as widely spoken about. In this lecture, we will cover all seven levels from the body to non-dual existence.
