We are extremely honored to welcome Eddie Stern back to Amsterdam and for the first time to Den Haag!
Eddie is a well known yoga teacher, author, and lecturer based in New York City. He is known for his multi-disciplinary approach to furthering education and access to yoga, as well as his teaching expertise in Astanga Yoga. His approach combines the ancient philosophy and practices of yoga with a modern, scientific understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms that make yoga work.
Eddie has followed for more than twenty-five years the teachings of his guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, from whom he learned the most profound essence of the Astanga Yoga system. Always close to Guruji until his death in 2009, Eddie devoted a large part of his life to the study of the Astanga Yoga system, including its more esoteric aspects. He has studied Sanskrit and many of the scriptures of the Indian tradition as well as all aspects of the Indian and yogic culture. In the last decade Eddie’s focus has also moved towards investigating what makes yoga work so well and how science understands yoga to be an effective practice for nervous system self-regulation.
Eddie embodies the most authentic expression of how Indian thoughts can be relevant to our western lives. He's one of the most authoritative and well respected teachers of Astanga Yoga in the world today and this workshop is a great opportunity to share with him the true and pure essence of this uniquely comprehensive system of yoga.
The program will start in Den Haag on Friday and Saturday, to then continue in Amsterdam on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. In this 5 days workshop, Eddie will offer a combination of mysore practice and lectures with chanting, pranayama and philosophy for regular practitioners as well as students just new to Astanga Yoga.
Every morning will start with the traditional Mysore Style of self practice, followed by a chanting, lecture and philosophy session each day on different topics. There will also be 2 afternoon sessions dedicated to explore a variety of scientific findings and yogic explanations that complement both an Eastern and Western approach to spiritual practice. Space for Q&A’s will be offered in all workshops.
Mysore practice is appropriate for beginners as well as students of all levels and is the traditional method of learning yoga, one on one from teacher to student. Due to the limited time available however, we would recommend participants to be already familiar with the practice of Astanga Yoga at some level.

Stillness, Feeling, Acting and Thinking: The Four Modes of Yoga
In this lecture Eddie will discuss the four paths of yoga that represent the four basic ways that we interact with the world. Yoga at its core is the practice of knowing who we are on a deep level. The access we have to that inner knowledge gets cloudy because our minds are filled with thoughts, desires, confusion, conflict and regrets. Yoga provides remedies for all of these mental difficulties, which are reflected through the four paths, or modes, of yoga. In this class you’ll learn what the four paths are, how they apply to you, and what states of mind the four paths can help to soothe, so that you can use them to help strengthen your positive mental traits, and gradually diminish negative mental states. This class will include chanting, pranayama, and lecture.
Simple Practices for Inner Restoration
Burn-out, anxiety, stress, and depression are some of the most common side-effects of the fast-paced, high demand society that we live in today. We’ve all experienced them to some degree, and they all have one thing in common: inflammation. Inflammation, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. It fights off viruses and is a regulator of certain bodily functions - but too much of it causes us to break down. It’s the leading cause of 95% off all preventable diseases, including cardiovascular disease and irritable bowel syndrome.
The good news, however, is that inflammation has certain on and off switches that are not difficult to access, and when we know the tricks to switch the inflammation off, we tap into our inner keys to self regulation. By learning that we are not at the mercy of stress and the other exhausting side-effects of modern society, we can restore our energy, our sense of purpose and meaning, and express our creativity fully through the work we do and lives we live.
This session includes a simple yoga (asana) practice. What we will cover:
1. Introduction to stress, inflammation and resiliency, and resonance breathing.
2. Resonance breathing: next steps to autonomic nervous system balance.
3. Changing our self-perception and changing our stress-perception.
4. A simple yoga practice for down-regulating the sympathetic nervous system.
Life As Ritual
We will end the workshop in Den Haag with a puja (worship) on Saturday. In the first part of this session we will discuss how, in the Hindu tradition, the entire universe is seen as a grand ritual being played out on the altar of the Divine. In this view, performing simple, daily rituals, can ritualize even the most mundane aspects of our lives, so that every action we perform during the day becomes sacred.
