Astanga Yoga Workshop

With Petri Räisänen

This workshop has taken place already, please visit our Workshop Page for a more recent offering of workshops and trainings.

We are very happy to welcome Petri back in Amsterdam and The Hague, to experience directly the therapeutic effects of Astanga Yoga - from the hands of a great healer - and to learn more about pranayama, chanting, meditation, healing and hands-on adjustments!

Petri is a direct student of Sri K P Jois and R Sharath Jois and he is officially authorized to teach primary and intermediate series. He worked closely with his guru Sri K Pattabhi Jois, who authorized him to teach in 2001.

You will have a choice to join just the morning Mysore practices, or to follow the whole program, which covers two extra sessions every day after practice. A wonderful opportunity. All levels are welcome in the morning Mysore, but you should already be familiar with the Astanga yoga system.

In addition to teaching yoga, Petri worked as a folk healer and naturopath and ran a natural treatment business in Helsinki from 1991 to 1999. Petri studied and worked with the Finnish folk healer masters for twelve years, starting in 1988. Drawing on many different healing techniques, like bone setting, herbal healing, cupping and energy healing. This is a workshop centred around gentle and healing touch in asana adjustments. It's magic in the most natural way.

Sunday 10 November

6:30 - 10:00 Morning Mysore Practice (please make sure to choose your starting time here)

10:30 - 12:30 Mind focus: How to use mantra and other mind techniques in the asana practice.

During the practice of Astanga Yoga, we attempt to reach the sattvic (pure, peaceful) state of mind. Astanga Yoga is not only a physical exercise but also a practice of deep concentration, body and mind observation and meditation. This sattvic state is not something which is possible only for more advanced students of yoga. Moreover, it can be the state of mind from the beginning, from the very first yoga class.

14:00 - 16:30 How the traditional Vinyasa system works (in detail). Vinyasa types, breath and movement.

Astanga yoga is a clear system which shows how to enter into, and exit from, the state of the asana. The Primary series is built on five different vinyasa types which are also the base for the Intermediate and Advanced sequences. Forward bends, twists, backbends, poses where we lie on the back and inverted (viparita karani) asanas all have their own vinyasa types. This information will provide clarity and peace in your Astanga Yoga practice. Clarity of mind in Astanga Yoga comes from the practice, from purification (both inner and outer), and from the understanding and practical application of the vinyasa system.

Petri will also be teaching a 2-day workshop in Amsterdam. Find all information about this workshop here
