Astanga Yoga Workshop

We are very happy to welcome Petri back in Amsterdam and The Hague, to experience directly the therapeutic effects of Astanga Yoga - from the hands of a great healer - and to learn more about Pranayama, Asana, Tension & Trauma releasing exercises and the Mantra Om. Next to this, there will be a discussion on current topics in society and Yoga, and learning about adjustments for all bodies!

 

Petri is a direct student of Sri K P Jois and R Sharath Jois and he is officially authorized to teach primary and intermediate series. He worked closely with his guru Sri K Pattabhi Jois, who authorized him to teach in 2001.

 

You will have a choice to join single sessions or to follow the whole program, which covers two extra sessions every day after practice. A wonderful opportunity. All levels are welcome in the morning Mysore, but you should already be familiar with the Astanga yoga system. 

 

Friday 16 October


06.30 -10.30 Led Primary Series   

The traditional exact vinyasa counting, Sanskrit asana names, and counting with a continuous rhythm guided by Petri. (two shifts if needed)

 

11.00 - 13.00 Workshop Opening Discussion, Pranayama & Meditation

Discussion on Yoga and current topics in society (e.g. Black Lives Matter, diversion in yoga), a light Pranayama practice (breathing exercises), and meditation (quiet sitting).

 

14.00 -16.30 Workshop: Asana adjustments for all body and mind types 

We are all different body types and shapes. What is easy for one student can be impossible for someone else. That doesn’t mean that someone is doing better or worse yoga. How we can observe the student's body and mind types and be flexible with the “traditional” Astanga system? Making the practice comfortable for all the students and creating a safe zone to be who you are.

Morning Mysore practice (self-practice)


10.30 - 12.30 Tension & Trauma releasing exercises


Tension & Trauma releasing exercises (TRE) is a “shaking therapy” created by David Berceli. It's Petri’s favorite technique to release the tensions and empty the mind after the practice. We will practice the technique and experience the free movement of the body, a natural way for the body and mind to work with the tensions and traumas.

 

14.00 - 16.30 Workshop: Finishing Sequence

In this session, we will cover the alignment and therapeutical benefits of the asanas of the Finishing Sequence. Petri will cover theory, vinyasas, healing aspects and hands-on adjustments for the closing part of the Astanga Yoga practice.

06.30 - 8.15 or 8.15 - 10.00 Morning Mysore

Morning Mysore practice (self-practice)


10.30 - 12.30 The Mantra Om

In this session we'll look at the mantra Om, it's meaning, and the correct way to use it in Asana and Pranayama. After the theory, we'll 'practice' together in an Om Circle.


The expression of that (Isvara) is Om. Pranava Om is the sound frequency of creation (heard as inner ringing sound). The repetition of that (Om-pranava) leads to realising of its meaning.


14.00 - 16.30 Workshop: Intuition in Asana and Pranayama

How to use your intuition in asana and pranayama practices, to create your own individual practice that serves you as physical therapy as well as mental and spiritual development. Yoga is always an individual practice. It is important to find your own pace, comfort, and therapy techniques.
