Fundamentals of Asana Alignment - Part one

Part one: straight leg standing postures.

Learn some basic alignment techniques for standing asana. Bones are great at carrying weight (evolutions best result yet!) To use bones effectively, they need to be placed carefully so as to protect joints. Bones are placed and supported by muscles and ligaments. Each joint requires the muscles to brace the bones on both sides of the joint to remain stable. Done well, the body can feel tall and graceful, as the weight descends into the floor in effortless manor.

It is not all about the body. Alignment is a powerful tool to stabilise the mind and build a meditative focus. The body gives direct feedback about the attitude of the mind. Being in the body and brave enough to feel how it ‘is’ supports the practice of being more present.
