Introduction to Astanga Yoga

Introduction to Astanga Yoga with Eddie Stern

If you have heard about Astanga Yoga, but think that it sounds too hard or that you need to somehow know it already before you come to a class, or you have wanted to try it but feel intimidated, then this workshop will give you an easy access introduction to some of the poses, breathing, and philosophy behind this practice. We will talk about the techniques used in yoga, the philosophy behind the practice, the original meanings of the word vinyasa, and practice some of the poses from the primary series. It will be part discussion, and part practice. We’ll cover modifications of poses that are difficult, or that allow for practice if you have any injuries that you are being wary of.

We’ll also save time for questions, tips on how to start and maintain a practice, or anything else that is on your mind. Astanga Yoga is a cohesive, structured practice of yoga that is meant to be internalized, meaning, once you learn it, it is yours forever, to practice wherever you are, on your own. Yoga seeks to make us autonomous beings; structure is supposed to lead to freedom. We will discuss, and hopefully experience these things, in this class.

This is a unique opportunity to be introduced to this unique system of yoga directly by one of the most experienced teachers in this lineage, who is able to make it accessible and relevant to each individual student. Open to anybody curious to learn about the Astanga method and to meet Eddie Stern, this workshop will prepare you to either continue forward into Mysore classes, or to go to higher levels of led classes.

(Are you a regular practitioner? Check this workshop!)

Eddie is a well known yoga teacher, author, and lecturer based in Brooklyn, New York. He is known for his multi-disciplinary approach to furthering education and access to yoga, as well as his teaching expertise in Astanga Yoga. His approach combines the ancient philosophy and practices of yoga with a modern, scientific understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms that make yoga work. Eddie has followed for more than twenty-five years the teachings of his guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, from whom he learned the most profound essence of the Astanga Yoga system. Always close to Guruji until his death in 2009, Eddie devoted his entire life to the study of the Astanga Yoga system, including its more esoteric aspects. He has studied Sanskrit and many of the scriptures of the Indian tradition as well as all aspects of the Indian and yogic culture. Eddie embodies the most authentic expression of how Indian thoughts can be relevant to our western lives. He's one of the most recognized and extraordinary teachers of Astanga Yoga in the world today and this workshop is a great opportunity to get introduced to this system of yoga by a great master.

For maximum benefit, we would recommend you to join the full weekend and to continue with the morning Mysore practice on Monday and Tuesday with Eddie.

Mysore practice is appropriate for beginners as well as students of all levels and is the traditional method of learning yoga, one on one from teacher to student. These two days of Mysore classes are open for all students who attend the weekend led classes, and anyone else that has prior knowledge of practicing Astanga Yoga.

Program Outline

  • 10:30 - 12:15: Beginners Led Class and Q&A's
  • 14:00 - 16:00: Chanting, lecture and philosophy session: Stories and Teachings from Yoga Mala: The founder of Astanga Yoga, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, wrote his only book on yoga in 1958, called Yoga Mala. “Mala” means a garland, and in Pattabhi Jois’s book, he explains that the practice of Astanga Yoga is one of stringing postures together on the thread of the breath, like flowers are strung on a thread to create a garland, or beads on a rosary. The book is packed filled with details and teachings about the various limbs of yoga. In 1997, Eddie embarked on a two-year project to translate and publish Yoga Mala in English, which involved working with Sanskrit professors in Mysore, and many months of reviewing translations and corrections with Sharath and Pattabhi Jois. In this class, Eddie will talk about some of the background philosophy that highlights Pattabhi Jois’s perspective in writing Yoga Mala, and stories that happened along the way. The first English edition of Yoga Mala was published in 1999. Since then, it has been translated in thirteen languages and sold over 100,000 copies.

  • 10:30 - 12:15: Beginners Led Class and Q&A's
  • 14:00 - 16:00: Chanting, lecture and philosophy session: The Timeless Teachings of Yoga: The mantras and teachings of Yoga in the Upanishads and other texts are largely about liberation from the illusory cycle of birth and death, and awakening to the realization that consciousness is never born, and never dies. Each Upanishad begins with a peace invocation, followed by special teachings on yoga practices, different levels of consciousness, and the ways of Self knowledge. They are beautiful and poetic, mystical in nature, and often revelatory. In this class, we will chant some of these profound mantras, and we will discuss the meanings associated with them. These are mantras that you can also include in your own, personal practices. No chanting or Sanskrit experience is necessary to attend this class.

Location: Prinseneiland 20G, Amsterdam
Price: 150 euros for the full weekend, 85 euros for Saturday only

Extra on Saturday 16th June, 17:00-18:00:

Ganesh Puja for Knot On My Planet

We will inaugurate this workshop with a special ceremony to honor Ganesh, the elephant-headed Hindu deity who is the remover of obstacles, and the giver of success for all new undertakings. This ceremony creates a feeling of joy and enthusiasm, and creates a special sense of community. Explanations will be given as we go through the steps of the ceremony, which will include group chanting and other offerings. Throughout 2018, Eddie is going around the world performing this ritual to also spread the awareness of the plight of the mighty and majestic elephants, whose existence on this planet is being imperiled through poaching. While pujas are always free, we are accepting donations at the end of these special pujas, and all of the money collected will be donated to Knot On MY Planet, which supports elephant protection in Africa. These pujas are being performed, this year, in Moscow, Stockholm, Chengdu, London, Amsterdam, Milan, India, Buenos Aires, and Tel Aviv. Please wear clean, festive clothing, and bring fresh fruits, nuts, or flowers, which we will offer to Ganesh during the ritual (and cash for your highly appreciated donations).
