The psoas is a deep muscle that is a major player in our body that has many jobs. It acts as a stabilizer between the lower body and the upper body, it is a mover of the legs and it creates flexion of the hips. For yoga practitioners, having a juicy psoas and awakened core has a tremendous positive effect on forward bends, backbends and twists. Besides the physical benefits of a healthy psoas, this hipflexor also has a powerful effect on how able you are to relax and feel good in your body. With the psoas being responsible for many functions, tightness in this muscle is very common in all people, even active people. It can lead to problems ranging from back pain to knee and ankle issues. Body workers and yoga teachers are now getting more familiar with the workings of this important deep hipflexor.
In addition to its physcial role, the psoas is also an “emotional” muscle and your “second brain.” Stress, unprocessed trauma and emotions are stored deep within your body, and in the psoas muscle. To access this part of yourself and to learn to release it, can be of great benefit to finding more ease, wellbeing and vitality.
The psoas muscle lies deep within your pelvis, is an important player together with your low back and abdominal muscles. Your psoas greatly influences the alignment of your pelvis and the engagement of your other abdominal muscles. Feeling the pelvis , releasing the psoas and activating your abdominal core is the key to optimal pelvic alignment and stability.
In this day workshop, you will be introduced to your psoas, learn how through various easy exercises how to align your pelvis, access your psoas and move from your core!
The workshop is accessible to students of all levels, an can be of particular interest to yoga teachers wanting to learn more about the effect of the psoas and pelvic alignment in yoga and vice versa.
In these workshops, you will learn:
- How to align your pelvis and low back in different asana
- how to locate your psoas and determine the effect on your posture
- about the role of the psoas on all levels of being - physiological, emotional and energetic levels
- how to release the psoas and become conscious of your abdominal muscles to discover balance in your body
- how to strengthen the different layers of your abdomen
- how to strengthen and lengthen the psoas
Workshop 1 "Exploring the Psoas"
In this workshop you will learn how to tune into your psoas and feel it. When the psoas contracts, when it releases. You will understand how the psoas works in relationship with your abdominals and how it influences the position of your pelvis and your spine. You will have an experience of how your breath relates to your psoas muscle and how to use your breath to relax your psoas.
Workshop 2: "Aligning the psoas"
In this workshop you will practice all the major asana groups; standing poses, forward bends, hipopeners and backbends and more and how the psoas relates to each asana differently. You will learn how the state (stiffness/laxity) of your psoas plays outr in the different asana and how to align your psoas in a way that is healthy and beneficial in each asana group. You will have a better understanding of how an awakened core supports good alignment and how to honor and treat your body well in your yoga practice in a way that supports your growth and progress.
It is highly recommended to take both workshops. The first workshop will be more gentle and focussed on breath and realxation, the second will be more active and asana focussed.
