The internal practice of Astanga yoga


The word vinyasa refers to doing something in a very special way, like a ritual, or even an offering. Join Michael for this 2 day workshop on cultivating the internal forms of Astanga vinyasa yoga, where we explore what vinyasa means when we move from the external rituals of practice to cultivating the internal form of awareness.


Drawing inspiration from Krishnamacharya’s lineage ideas of intelligent progression as found in the Astanga system of Sri K P Jois, precise alignment instruction and support postures as developed by BKS Iyengar, and the modification to the individual cultivated in yoga therapy, Michael teaches the cultivation of internal form as a path towards finding the middle way, a free and open spaciousness.


All sessions will have talks and asana or practical exercises. You can join one day only, or get the best out of this workshop by joining both days.


The workshop is intended for all levels of practitioners, though a strong interest in yoga's full potential is welcomed, and having some asana practice experience would make this workshop physically less demanding. Highly recommended for all astanga practitioners!

Program Outline


Saturday 16 September

Morning Session (10:00-13:00)

  • Opening talk: Becoming aware that our state of mind is part of a posture is quite an advancement in our practice. As we learn to move from focusing on the shape of the posture to all its subtle manifestations, we start to come closer to the deeper aspects of yoga.
  • Led asana class: Drawn from the primary series and looking at asymmetrical forward bends, focusing on internal form.

Afternoon Session (14:30-17:30)

  • Pranayama in asana: How to become aware of the breath in asana practice is vital to our progress. Students often neglect the art of breathing in the postures, especially when the posture becomes challenging. Learn to shift your focus by seeing asana practice as a breathing exercise and through learning how to breathe properly by seeing how the abdominal cavity, diaphragm and back body relate to the pelvic floor (bandhas).
  • Asana workshop: Joining together inter-related oppositions to find stillness in standing postures


Sunday 17 September

Morning Session (10:00-13:00)

  • Talk: short talk on anatomical aspects of back bending (more in depth in the afternoon)
  • Led asana class: The principles of back bending, focusing on internal form and the integration on oppositions in asana.

Afternoon Session (14:30-17:30)

  • Talk: On the aspects of practice, from building a self practice using the astanga sequences of logical progression in a mysore format, to connecting the practice to the lineage ideas as expressed in the teachings of Shankaracharya.
  • Asana workshop: Building up the back bend through understanding alignment, the importance of using the legs, and the identification of the areas of the body where we often get stuck.
