This workshop has taken place already, please visit our Workshop Page for a more recent offering of workshops and trainings.
We are extremely honoured to welcome Eddie Stern back to Amsterdam. Eddie is a well-known yoga teacher, author, and lecturer based in New York City. He is known for his multi-disciplinary approach to furthering education and access to yoga, as well as his teaching expertise in Astanga Yoga. His approach combines the ancient philosophy and practices of yoga with a modern, scientific understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms that make yoga work.
Eddie has followed for more than twenty-five years the teachings of his guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, from whom he learned the most profound essence of the Astanga Yoga system. Eddie devoted a large part of his life to the study of the Astanga Yoga system, including its more esoteric aspects. He has studied Sanskrit and many of the scriptures of the Indian tradition as well as all aspects of the Indian and yogic culture. In the last decade, Eddie’s focus has also moved towards investigating what makes yoga work so well and how science understands yoga to be an effective practice for nervous system self-regulation.
Eddie embodies the most authentic expression of how Indian thoughts can be relevant to our western lives. He's one of the most authoritative and well-respected teachers of Astanga Yoga in the world today and this workshop is a great opportunity to share with him the true and pure essence of this uniquely comprehensive system of yoga.
Therapeutics and Chanting
This two-day afternoon workshop will be broken up into two segments. The first segment will cover yoga practices for back pain and core strengthening. The postures will include a protocol currently being used in a three-year back pain study at New York University’s Langone School of Medicine. We will discuss the different poses and why they were chosen. Time for questions, individual aches and pains, and experimentation for individual needs will be an integral part of the class.
In the second segment, we will learn how to chant Adi Shankaracharya’s Atma Shatakam, the six verses on self-realization. Each verse of the prayer ends with the refrain “Chidananda rupam Shivo’ham Shivo’ham,” which translates as “My true nature is existence and bliss, I am pure consciousness, I am pure consciousness.” Each of the verses contains a list of things that we are not: our body, our senses, our intellect, etc., culminating in what Advaita Vedanta holds that we truly are. In line with yoga therapy, this prayer guides us in the shaping of our inner perception and intentions, which is the ultimate therapy.
Please note that this workshop is suitable for all yoga students, from any yoga tradition and with any level of experience, including complete beginners. No experience with Astanga Yoga is necessary. Please bring your own mat as the workshop is held at the beautiful Vondelkerk.
